Behind The Scenes
Hello Book Fanatics,
I have a treat for you today. Al Stone stopped by to give us something to think about. Take a look Behind The Scenes.
Author Interview Questions
1. What is your Author pen name?
2. What genre(s) do you write & why?
So far, I’ve written YA fantasy purely because the character that appeared to me was a teenager, and his origin was of the supernatural kind. Prior to this, I wasn’t big on the YA genre, aside from the really popular books like Harry Potter, but now it’s my favourite genre to read.
3. What inspired you to become an author?
I suffered a minor head injury over a decade ago, and I’ve suffered from hallucinations ever since, the main character of my story, Charlie Blake, being one of those hallucinations. It’s been a hard journey but a beautiful one – a beautiful disaster, so to speak. And I did get a trilogy out of it, so I’m not complaining.
4. What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Hone your craft. Get to know as much as you can about the art of writing. Don’t be afraid to take risks, and you have to truly believe in your story to gain the drive to get it where you want it to be. Writing the book is only one part of the journey. The other part is getting it into the hands of readers, so do a lot of research on marketing. It’s also good to have a thick skin. Just remember, you can’t please everyone, but you have to please yourself.
5. What do you like the most and least about being an author?
The thing I like most about being an author is hearing about the effect your story has on a person. It could be the simplest thing, such as making someone smile, but because of the fact that it had an impact on someone, you can’t help but feel good. The thing I like least about being an author is the pressure of feeling the need to satisfy everyone. When it comes to certain scenes that may be controversial, you can get stuck in your head, wondering if you’re making the right move. It’s not necessarily hard to get over this issue, but it is frustrating to deal with. After my debut novel, I decided to just worry about satisfying one person: myself. That pretty much solved the problem.
6. Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what did you do to get past it?
Fortunately, I’ve never had writer’s block, but it’s probably due to the way I churn out my stories. I don’t plan. I just write whenever I have the urge to do so. So far, it’s worked. Let’s hope it continues.
7. Who are your favorite authors?
There are so many, but the ones that come to mind right off the bat are J.M. Barrie, Jane Austen, Stephen King, Oscar Wilde, Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan, Neil Gaiman, George Orwell and Emily Bronte.
8. What’s next for you; any upcoming events, new releases and etc.?
I am currently writing a children’s picture book, which is very challenging but exciting at the same time. It’s not something I ever thought I would do, but when an idea is there, sometimes, you just have to roll with it.
9. Where can we find you and your work?
